For the first story about tobacco, it is interesting how they depict this herb as a sacred herb used to heal and keep people happy. Now when one thinks of the plan in modern, healthcare settings, one only thinks of the cigarette smoking epidemic causing many deaths. It is ironic how in this story, the people of this town were dying without the plant. I am curious how the Cherokee used the plan. Did they smoke it? Did they use the herb for other religious purposes? Also, what makes the Dagûl`kû so powerful that it had the ability to kill large animals. Is this animal used as a symbol for another tribe or enemy? To me, this story seems similar to convey how the seemingly smallest and least powerful creatures can make the biggest impact. From the hummingbird's actions of begging the others for a chance, one can infer that the creature had high self esteem and confidence which I found admirable when reading the story. It was the small size of this hummingbird that made him stronger than any of the other animals, when initially they assumed he was weak.
For this Origin of Strawberries story, I loved how the beauty of nature and newness caused an overwhelming sense of forgiveness of the women. I think it would be interesting to get a depiction of the prelude of this story. Why were they fighting? I wish there was more character development, so I could get more of a glimpse into the emotions the man and woman were feeling. The strawberry plant-- the fruit that connects the couple back together was the first ever plant of this fruit on the earth. Thus, the ripeness, juiciness, and freshness has symbolizes that the man and woman have an opportunity to begin again without resentment from previous situations.
